"Helping"

Hi fellow blogger! It's been a while since my first post! In our Journey in Literature class we are currently discussing a book called "Down on the Island" by Jim Cooper. More specifically, we are currently discussing the "Helping" chapter.  This chapter talks about puerto ricans (and puerto rican students) willingness to "help" each other. The chapter basically says that people from Puerto Rico help each other in any situation to prove their acceptance towards each other. The students in the university cheated on the tests and copied them from another. They pressured the professor to help their grade with friendly gestures and gifts.

In my opinion, people should always help each other. However, nothing gets me boiling more than cheaters. I understand that you want to help out your fellow "friends" or classmates or whatever, but at the same time you gotta be considerate of people who actually work hard for their grades. People don't excel at every single thing and you should help anyone who is struggling in achieving something (positive, of course); don't let people take advantage of you though. First think: "Can I help with this situation?" "Does this person deserve my help?" "What is he/she asking of me?" We puerto ricans are pretty friendly folk (mostly) and we offer our help and hospitality to almost anyone, but the students DO have the bad habit of "helping" a bit too much.

There's a saying that suits this: "A little help, goes a long way."
