A Small Place: Part 4 (Conclusion)

Finally finished reading "A Small Place" by Jamaica Kincaid.

This fourth chapter is really short. The chapter basically talks about the beauty of Antigua. The author describes the beauty as unreal and emphasises that nothing like it cannot be seen anywhere else. She also gives a summary (in her eyes) of the history of Antigua. It was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493,  settled by the English who enslaved and mistreated the locals and then they left "in a certain way". Kincaid mentions that when you cease to be something (no matter what you were) you return to exist as just a human being (slaves and slave owners alike).

As far as the book goes, I liked it mostly. I agree with a lot of the things she said in it, probably because Puerto Rico has a similar situation. I get the fact that she was angry and I consider the book to be a way of venting and expressing her feelings toward the subject of her homeland; however, I found the book to be a bit redundant. She talked about the same thing over and over. I get that when you repeat something it's to give some emphasis but it can bore or tire the reader. It was an interesting read nonetheless and is oficially added to my repertoire of "Books I should recommend to people who are looking for something to read about the Caribbean."
