A Room with a View

Ciao Bloggers! I recently watched “A Room with a View”. I must honestly say that I found the movie boring and at times I barely understood it but I did a little research and it all makes sense now.

The movie is about Lucy and her older cousin Charlotte who are from Surrey and go on holiday to Italy. Lucy was raised in an easygoing household and has isn’t as uptight as Charlotte which sort of creates tension. At a pensione Lucy meets Eleanor Lavish an author, Mr. Emerson, his son George, Reverend Beebe and two Miss Alans. The women want a room with a view so they switch with Mr. Emmerson. Lucy begins to fall for George for his way of thinking and his expressed emotions. George kisses Lucy in the country, but is interrupted by Charlotte. Lucy is shocked but is also romanced. Charlotte tries to brainwash Lucy into thinking that George is an indecent man.

When Lucy returns to England she accepts a marriage proposal from a wealthy snob named Cecyl Vyse. She later finds out that George and his father will be her neighbors. When Lucy sees George her feelings for him resurface. Lucy keeps refusing George, but breaks off her engagement with Cecil. Lucy is confronted by Reverend Beebe before she leaves to Greece. She realizes that she only planned to travel to escape her feelings for George. At the end, George and Lucy kiss at the Italian pensione where they met.

While this movie is about travels and physical Journeys, it’s really more about internal journey. We can clearly see that as the movie progresses Lucy learns more things about herself, what she likes and dislikes. She lets go of her “formal” persona and gets more in touch with her feelings until she finally stays with George who has the qualities she has really wanted all along. These kinds of Journeys are vital in every individual’s life. They are the ones that determine in the long run how you will turn out to be. We go through these journeys more than one may think; we overlook some simple decisions in life as being a growing journey when in reality they are shaping us. That’s what people mean when they refer to something as a “growing experience”, it’s another step in your life journey.

PS. I had written this a while back but forgot to post it, oops.
